Challenge 83 – Ghostly Images

Welcome to another round of Photo Challenge!

Challenge set by Donna Williamson
Submission Deadline: Friday October 31, 2014
Voting Deadline: Monday Nov 10, 2014
Winning Image: Always Near by Jacci Hunter

Special Instructions

Since my challenge ends at Halloween I would like the subject to be Ghostly Images. There is no editing using software allowed to create the images, it needs to be done using shutter speeds. Here is the link to a cute video on how to do this.

thanks Kathy! I had a blast with this challenge. I am getting my votes out of the way early because I can see myself getting busy and forgetting.

    1. Always Near. Jacci, really cool shot! I think it could be improved in post processing ever so slightly by lightening the baby’s face. It is a little too shadowed I think but I really love the composition and the idea of only seeing the hand of the “ghost”.
    2. Ghost in the Woods. Donna, I really like this one. Excellent amount of transparency.
    3. Unwanted Visitor. Kathy, this one is scary, which makes it kind of cool. I think the angle of the composition could have been improved upon. I do like how you kept it in colour because I think it adds to the drama of the photo.

Donna, tell me about “Ghostly Pair”. The lighting on the one face is really interesting. Was that intentional? And as I already said, I had a BLAST with this challenge. Thanks so much for picking it! 🙂

    1. Someone is watching. Really good picture. Good interpretation of the subject.
    2. Misty morning visitor. The sepia really adds to the mood.
    3. Always Near. Great picture.

Jeannie, ghost girl would have been my first choice but I felt the ghosting wasn’t strong enough. That was a haunting photo.

The lighting on my one photo was intentional. We had played around with it at a workshop I intended and thought I would try it again,ReplyCancel

Great challenge. Sorry I wasn’t able to participate.

    1. Someone is watching – Jeannie, this is incredible. Very captivating.
    2. Misty Morning Visitor – Jeannie. Again, well done. Technically spectacular, emotionally pulling. Would do well on a wall.
    3. Ghost in the Woods – Donna. Great execution of the theme. Has Tedder lost weight?

I really liked Ghost Girl, actually it would have been my first choice, except that she wasn’t quite “ghosty” enough.
I also liked the technical aspect of Ghostly Pair … but it just didn’t sing out to me.

    Well done everyone.

    1st Always Near
Jacci, I just love this shot! There were several really strong entries but this one really stands out for the story it tells. Very nice.

    2nd Ghost Girl
Jeannie, this shot is excellent and I could have easily picked this as my choice for the win as well.

    3rd Misty Morning Visitor
Jeannie, I really like this for the story it tells, and the lighting you captured in this scene makes it a very strong image. In fact, I tend to think that this image would be even better without the ghost effect. Do you have a version like that?ReplyCancel

It really was a great morning for photography. As soon as I saw the fog, I headed to the cemetery with my camera. I had the idea for the ghost challenge and was hoping the conditions presented in the time frame and they did. It really was a cool morning. Not sure if you can tell, but I am actually shooting into the rising sun in this pic. That added it’s own challenges, but I loved the setting. I have others from that morning that I should post in my outtakes album on FB, but I didn’t specifically take any without the “ghost” because I was on a mission while the conditions (fog and light) held! 😉

I will say it again … I may have had more fun with this challenge then any other one we have done! Thanks Donna!!ReplyCancel
